Established in 2005, DRP Engineering, Inc. (DRP) is a professional consulting firm providing civil and environmental engineering design services for clients throughout Southern California.  

  

DRP is a local small and emerging business enterprise (SBE and MBE) located in Alhambra, California.

PROJECT EXPERIENCES

Long Beach Water Department

Completed various water main replacement projects total approximately 20,000 linear feet of pipelines.  DRP introduced aerial survey technology which streamlined the design process and reduced total project cost.

Suburban Water Systems - A SouthWest Water Company

Provided cost effective designs for several water main renewal projects with PVC pipe. DRP was able to mobilized in short notice and completed the project within a very challenging time schedule.

Long Beach Water Department

DRP staffs provided design, bid, and construction management phase services for the rehabilitation of 4 water wells. This project included overall review and providing recommendations for a comprehensive rehabilitation program which included chemical and mechanical process and a complete design and construction bid package. Also, prepared plans and specifications for demolition and reconstruction for the wells, including removal of obsolete equipment and pump, motor, and piping replacement.

Marine Corps. Base Camp Pendleton

DRP staff managed the engineering design of the Design-Build Team for three pump stations, a new three million gallon reservoir,

approximately 100,000 feet of 24-inch pipeline, approximately 28,000 feet of 14-inch pipeline in Las Pulgas Road to existing reservoir, and a new pressure reducing station east of the I-5 crossing.

Golden State Water Company

DRP staff was the Project Manager/Lead Design Engineer for the Budlong Plant Site Booster Pump Station and Replacement Reservoirs  project.  The project consists of the demolition and replacement of two reservoirs, design of a booster pump station, yard piping and appurtenances, site grading, and electrical and instrumentation upgrades. Responsibilities included managing production of detailed design drawings and specifications, including coordinating work and supervising a team of engineers and designers, performing and reviewing hydraulic calculations, managing budget, and coordinating with the client.

Long Beach Water Department

The DRP staff completed the hydraulic analysis of a portion of the Long Beach Water Department's water system served by the 32nd Street

Booster Pump Station (BPS) and several MWD (imported water) turnouts, providing a mix of groundwater and imported water.

The objective of the study was to determine the role of the BPS in serving the area. This project included running several scenarios to provide recommendations for the mode of operation of the BPS.

California American Water

DRP staffs performed Construction Management Services for the water wells installation, wellhead site improvement, and treatment upgrade projects located in the Main San Gabriel Basin. This project included overall review and providing recommendations for a comprehensive water well redrilling program and a complete design and construction bid package. Also prepared plans and specifications for demolition and reconstruction for 6 wells, including removal of obsolete equipment, pump, and motor. Responsibilities included managing of production of detailed design drawings; reviewing

hydraulic calculations of drain line; performing water quality characterization; coordinating work and supervising team of engineers and designers; specification writing; managing budget; and coordination with client.

Golden State Water Company

The DRP staffs completed the design of a new well and associated treatment facility including a booster pump station, chlorine chemical building, forebay tank, and percolation pond for drainage at the Rapture Road Wellhead Facilities in Phelan California.  Responsibilities included managing production of detailed design drawings, including coordinating work and supervising team of engineers and designers, specification writing, performing hydraulic calculations and coordination with the client.

Los Angeles County Waterworks District No. 40

DRP staffs provided engineering design services for the design-build of 4 potable wells and discharge into existing storage tanks. For this project, the team provided design of the conveyance for the discharge into existing storage tanks. Responsibilities included assisting the project manager in the overall design, conducting hydraulic analysis of water distribution in the pipe, and design/sizing of the pump and equipment. Also managed preparation of detailed design drawings.

Long Beach Water Department

 

DRP staffs provided final design, construction management, and full-time construction inspection services, for drilling of West Coast Basin Well 1.  The new well is approximately 1,000 feet deep with production capacity of 2, 400 gpm. 

Suburban Water Systems

The DRP staffs prepared plans and specifications for the exploratory drilling and assisted with permitting and community support for the Plant 211 Exploration project. The exploratory well was completed and showed that a municipal water supply well in that area was not feasible due to water quality concerns. Plans are in place to

select alternate well sites.

California Water Service Company

The DRP staff provided design and inspection services during construction of the new well (ELA Well 62-02, Los Angeles, CA).  Exploration consisted of drilling a 17.5-inch pilot borehole to 1,000 feet and conducting downhole borehole geophysics and isolated aquifer zone testing to assess site-specific lithology, yield, and water quality.

Golden State Water Company

DRP's staffs finalized the design of a demolition plan for Mills Plant Reservoir in Claremont, CA.  The demolition includes the reservoir and all attached piping and valving, including the import of soil to backfill the portion of the structure that is below grade.

Las Virgenes Municipal Water District

DRP's staffs worked on the Calabasas Tank Rehabilitation Project (8 MG).  The work included field assessment of the exterior and interior coating, corrosion damage, seismic evaluation, and various site improvements. The engineering design includes removal and replacing the exterior and interior coating, restoring structural integrity of the tank, seismic improvements, and various site improvements.

Long Beach Water Department

 

DRP completed various sewer improvement projects which including reviewed more than 30,000 linear feet of existing closed-circuit television (CCTV) inspections for structural deficiencies and provided recommendations to rehabilitate and replace the sanitary sewer

pipeline. Pipe material includes vitrified clay pipe (VCP) and concrete pipe (CP or NRCP).  Rehabilitation methods includes trenchless repairs for full or sectional pipe lengths using cured-in-place pipe (CIPP), UV CIPP, carbon fiber reinforced polymer (FRP), glass FRP, top hats, dig and replace, and other alternative methods to solve structural. Additionally, DRP prepared bid documents (Plans and Specifications) and provided construction management for the project.

Long Beach Water Department

DRP provided project management, field assessment, and engineering/CAD design support services for S-18 Sewer Lift Station rehabilitation project (1-3 MGD). Work performed included field assessment of the existing odor control units, corrosion of electrical gear caused by H2S, VFDs & pump clogging, condition assessment of wet well (concrete degradation and lining) dry wet, FOG. The engineering design included replacing/upgrading the odor

control unit, wet well, installation of new lining to the wet well and electrical gear.

Long Beach Water Department

DRP provided CAD and engineering design support (as a subconsultant) for the 2.5 MGD S-1 Sewer Lift Station Rehabilitation project.  The design included field assessment of the existing odor control units, corrosion of electrical gear, VFDs,  sewer pumps, and wet well liner.  Final design includes replacing/upgrading the pumps, wet well rehab, installation of new lining to the wet well and electrical gear.

Long Beach Water Department

DRP provided project management ( as a sub-consultant), field assessment, and engineering/CAD design support services for the 4 MGD S-12 Sewer Lift Station rehabilitation project. The engineering design included replacing/upgrading the odor control unit, wet well, installation of new lining to the wet well and electrical gear.

Long Beach Water Department

DRP staff was the Deputy Project Manager for the Orange Avenue/7th Street Sewer Upgrade project performing construction management services for the construction of approximately 3,000 feet of 12- inch and 30-inch Extra Strength VCP. This project also included several manholes, a drop manhole, and a sewer siphon. The project required hydraulic modeling, trench load calculations, and cost estimates, Preliminary Design Report (PDR), traffic control plans, and permitting. The pipeline route had challenging rights-of-way and easement issues, with open-trench construction and jack-and-bore within the existing street right-of-way.

Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District

DRP provided assistance for completion of a study/preliminary design for MillerCoors Water Reuse Study. The study evaluated the options for treatment and reuse of the wastewater from brewing and packaging on the MillerCoors site. DRP’s responsibilities included managing

project coordination with MillerCoors, helping to develop treatment alternatives, providing input regarding proposed civil and pipeline improvements, completing preliminary equipment and pipeline layouts, and producing preliminary design documents.

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power

DRP staff was the Project Engineer for multiple recycled water retrofit design projects within the overall LADWP program. Involvement included the completion of retrofit plans for fifteen sites ranging from small parks to large high school complexes, many including booster pump stations. DRP’s responsibilities’s responsibilities included site evaluation, assisting with system shut downs, producing drawings for submission to Department of Public Health, and technical assistance and coordination for client meetings.

Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District

DRP served as the Program Manager for the Upper District’s Large Landscape Survey and Retrofit conservation program. The goal of the program was to help owners of large landscape irrigation systems conserve water. DRP’s responsibilities included managing the consultants; coordinating with service providers; coordinating with site owners; providing technical oversight; identifying sites and scheduling work; tracking retrofit performance; and promoting irrigation

conservation.

Long Beach Water Department

DRP provided lead process engineering for the design and construction of the Los Angeles River Pilot Project.  The pilot project is to investigate  the feasibility of treating the Los Angeles River water for use in augmenting the Long Beach water supply. The pilot system is located within a shipping container at the Dominguez Gap.  Project design tasks included treatment system design and layout; recommendation of equipment options and manufacturers; development of design drawings and 3D renderings; completion of process instrumentation design; assembly of treatment systems; and completion of process control and data logging systems. DRP provided general project management, technical design, equipment procurement and assembly, operational support, and coordination with the Long Beach staff.

Los Angeles Department of Public Works

DRP staff served as the Lead Civil Engineer/Designer for Dominguez Gap and DeForest Park Wetlands Projects for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, Watershed Management Division and the City of Long Beach, Parks Department. The project consisted of the design of treatment wetlands within existing stormwater detention basins along the Los Angeles River in the City of Long Beach. The design included trash removal devices, flow control mechanisms, civil grading, temporary irrigation systems, planting plans, and recreational components such as benches, trails, shade structure and signs. Responsibilities included design/ sizing of facilities, coordination with manufacturers, review of available equipment, overseeing production of

detailed design drawings, managing of budgets, and coordination with client.

Los Angeles Department of Public Works

DRP staff served as the Lead Civil Engineer/Designer for Sun Valley Park Project in Alhambra, California. This project consisted of the detailed design of an underground stormwater infiltration basin, small storm drain collection system, collection inlets, monitoring system, and several structural BMPs (swirl concentrators and media filters) for the removal of solids, trash, oil, and certain other constituents of concern, including heavy metals.  The DRP team produced contract plans including site plan and Plan & Profile sheets for on and offsite drainage systems, design/sizing of facilities, coordination with manufacturers, review of available equipment, finish grading for new soccer fields, and developed 3-D earthwork models and earthwork computations.

Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD)

DRP served as the Lead Civil Engineer/Designer for Distribution System

Infrastructure Protection Program for projects located in the West San Bernardino Region. Projects were located along the Inland Feeder Pipeline, the Rialto Pipeline, and the Upper Feeder Pipeline. Work entailed repair of existing MWD assets such as maintenance roads, maintenance work areas, and maintenance access structures. DRP was responsible directly to MWD Design Manager and provided detailed engineering functions including complex grading, storm drain

design, application of treatment BMPs, access road design, turn around/hammer head configurations at numerous MWD structures, security fencing, earthwork modeling, volume calculations, and horizontal geometry calculations for vehicular travel. Incorporated into the designs new-to-the-client products that would help mitigate environmental impacts to the project sites. Responsible for all electronic client deliverables. Working closely with MWD, DRP developed CAD/CAE standards and instructions for non-traditional projects at approximately 40 project sites. DRP managed work of other designers, technicians, and sub-consultants. Extensive use of ProjectWise Explorer (datasource on client’s server), Microstation, InRoads, and AutoTURN.

City of Los Angeles, Bureau of Sanitation

DRP's staff served as the project engineer for the concept design report for the Sepulveda Basin Treatment Wetlands

Park Project. This project consisted of a demonstration project to construct a 40-acre engineered wetlands within the Sepulveda Basin to help reduce nitrogen compounds in the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant effluent. The project also included plans to collect and treat urban runoff from various sources before being discharged to the Los Angeles River. Responsibilities included: review and

integration of comments; layout of wetlands for a potential new site; coordination with technical leads, subcontractors, and City staff; and directing the effort to update the report.

City of Los Angeles, Bureau of Sanitation

DRP staff was the project engineer for the final conceptual design report of the South Los Angeles Wetlands Park Project.  The 6-acre wetland system was designed to provide a community resource of wetlands and riparian habitat created in a densely populated urban area. Trails, boardwalks, and educational signage located within the created habitats would provide park users with an accessible and quiet refuge within the City to enjoy and learn about southern California ecology. The aquatic systems would be supplied with treated stormwater and extracted groundwater, providing the additional benefit of improving area water quality. Responsibilities included: review and integration of

comments; coordination with technical leads and City staff; and directing the effort to update the report.

 

KEY TEAM MEMBERS

Saik-Choon Poh, PE | Principal, Civil/Environmental Engineer

Mr. Poh specializes in environmental and civil engineering. He is experienced in water, stormwater, and wastewater conveyance and treatment facilities. As a key member of project teams, he has over 15 years of engineering experiences and has been responsible for directing work and coordinating closely with clients, subcontractors, contractors, and staff in multiple offices.  Prior to joining DRP, Mr. Poh worked for several Fortune 500 engineering firms and was the project manager to a number of large-scale projects.

Curt Roth, PE | Principal, Civil/Environmental Engineer

 

Mr. Roth is the founding member of DRP.  He specializes in environmental and civil engineering. He has over 20 years of experiences in water, storm water, recycled water and wastewater conveyance as well as all aspects of water and storm water treatment. Mr. Roth worked for several Fortune 500 engineering firms and has tremendous experience in designing, constructing and operating new and innovative systems for the treatment of water.

Eric Leung, PE | Vice-President, Director of Engineering

 

With more than 35 years of experience in the water and wastewater industry, Mr. Eric Leung serves as the Director of Engineering at DRP. He oversees company-wide operations and manages the internal departments that support DRP’s project teams. Prior joining DRP, Mr. Leung was the Deputy General Manager/Chief Engineer of Long Beach Water Department.  Mr. Leung also worked for City of Anaheim, Public Utilities Department - Water Engineering Division for 10 years. Mr. Leung has over 20 years of experiences in managing large-scale engineering projects. 

Steve Dombovary | Senior Civil Engineering Designer

Steve Dombovary has more than 23-years of civil drafting and design experience ranging from small to multi-billion dollar Capital Improvement Projects. He has more the 23 years of design experiences and understands the client’s needs and technical expectations.  Mr. Dombovary is the expert in civil design CADD, including application of AutoCad and Civil 3D. His specialties are in water conveyance pipeline, sewer/storm drain drafting and design, and in the development of complex grading plans and 3-dimensional linear/non-linear feature-based earthwork models. Mr. Dombovary will ensure the client deliverables are in compliance with drafting and design standards.
